I have already talked about the Twitter community website in a previous article. Twitter is a community site for microblogging. Everyone shares what it does. A good way of providing links, information (useful or not). Twitter has served as the main media of information during the riots in Iran after the elections (#iranelection).

As the title of this article say, Twitter may be related to a galaxy. By the number of members which doesn’t stop growing, but also by the number of applications and websites that revolve around it. We will study some of them in this article to give you an idea.

Applications

A number of client applications allow send tweets and see those contacts that you follow, without using the Twitter site.

With regard to applications on PCs, most of these applications are multiplateform because they use Adobe AIR technology. Here are some examples:

• Tweetdeck, probably the most used. It can also connect to her Facebook account.
• DestroyTwitter is an application that has been made the subject of thesis by a student ( @destroytoday ). Lighter than most competitors applications. Very promising. It is the application that I use personally.
• Spaz, a Twitter application. Very promising as well.

In addition, there are modules for Firefox. Twitbin pops up a section on the side containing the tweets of your contacts and PowerTwitter transforms content directly when you visit the Twitter site (such as Facebook: links to videos are transformed into mini-readers, links to images become images themselves, etc..). Not bad at all, but significantly slows down the loading of the site.

With regard to applications on smartphones, there are also Tweetdeck on iPhone, Spaz is also available on PalmOS. For iPhone, the application Twitterrific is widespread but many others exist. For Blackberry, few applications exist but Twitterberry seems to be most successful.

Many other applications exist, a list is available on http://twitter.com/downloads. A large number of applications due to the availability of an API to code for Twitter.

Web Sites

In addition to the Twitter site, a host of websites exist to allow sharing of content increasingly rich via Twitter, all using its Twitter account. Among these sites are:

• Twitpic, can post pictures on the web and tweeter (or not) the URL and the commentary to newly published picture.
• Tweetcube, lets you post on Twitter files (zip, pdf, mp3, etc.).
• Twiddeo provides, on how to Twitpic, share videos.
• Twitlater, to plan the publication of tweets.
• Bubbletweet, can publish a bubble where you appear and where you post a video message (requires a webcam).

Other sites, like Posterous, you can use their services (which are not directly related to Twitter) by simply using your Twitter ID.

The list of services is growing ever nearer! I found a list (in french) on a blog but it is not exhaustive. The number of services offered on twitter is so great that I doubt it is possible to quote all.
